Portland is renowned for its eclectic food scene, where diverse cultural influences converge to create something truly unique. Kafta House fits perfectly into this narrative, bringing the rich, aromatic tapestry of Levantine and broader Middle Eastern flavors to the forefront. Whether you are a long-time admirer of shawarma, falafel, or the namesake kafta, the preparation methods here honor the heritage while appealing to contemporary palates. It is this unwavering focus on culinary integrity that draws patrons back time and time again.
Key Highlights of the Kafta House Experience
When exploring what makes Kafta House a standout choice in the Portland dining scene, several key elements consistently rise to the top:
Authentic Halal Commitment: The foundational principle of the restaurant is strict adherence to Halal standards. This commitment provides peace of mind for diners observing dietary laws, ensuring that every dish, from the grilled skewers to the slow-cooked stews, meets the highest standards of preparation and sourcing. This focus on ethical sourcing is central to their identity.
Mastery of Traditional Dishes: While the menu offers variety, the restaurant truly excels in its signature items. The namesake Kafta—often seasoned ground meat mixed with herbs and spices, grilled to smoky perfection—is a testament to their skill. Similarly, their preparation of classic street foods is elevated through superior technique and ingredient selection.
Vibrant Flavor Profiles: The cuisine is characterized by its complex yet harmonious use of traditional Middle Eastern spices. Expect aromatic notes of cumin, coriander, turmeric, and fresh herbs that elevate the natural taste of the proteins and vegetables, creating dishes that are deeply satisfying without being overwhelmingly heavy.
Prime Location Accessibility: Situated conveniently on SW Ankeny Street, the location offers excellent access for both local workers and tourists exploring downtown Portland. Its accessibility makes it an ideal spot for a quick, high-quality lunch or a relaxed evening meal, integrating seamlessly into the urban rhythm of the city.
These highlights underscore a dedication not just to serving food, but to serving an experience—one built on trust, tradition, and outstanding taste. The restaurant successfully bridges the gap between traditional culinary methods and the expectations of a modern, discerning urban diner.

Kafta House Halal Food is a hidden gem in Portland! The flavors are authentic, the portions are generous, and the quality is top-notch. Their kafta is perfectly seasoned and juicy, and the shawarma melts in your mouth. The hummus and garlic … More

Kafta house is a halal food stand in downtown Portland, next to a few other stands. It's got quite a large menu with good prices and really good portion sizes. The flavors, taste and seasoning is absolutely amazing on their food though. I couldn't believe the lamb in my gyro! The guy who runs it here too is incredibly nice. This is the perfect lunch spot or even a quick bite if you're on the run, he made it all when I ordered in only a few minutes. Would go here everytime I come back to Portland.

This is a wonderful place to eat halal food; by far the best place I’ve tried yet in USA. We had lamb and chicken gyro and both were fantastic. The food is fresh and delicious, and the portions are generous. Great food, friendly owner and staff, and hygiene is held to the highest standards. My wife is allergic to sesame (which is a key ingredient in hummus and tahini), so I told the staff about that and they all stood there making sure we get our order allergen-free. Very nice people from the owner to the chef, to the young American guy working with them. I hope them all the best.

Stopped on a nice day and had the Chicken Shawarma Gyro while my husband had the Beef Shawarma combo. Both were delicious, perfectly cooked and great flavor. After looking at all the trucks, I noticed the cook, deliver food to one of the other trucks, and figured it must’ve been good! Would definitely recommend! More

Went here on our recent trip to Portland and was probably the best meal I had there! Best gyros I've ever had (so juicy and cooked just right) with great condiments. Would come here again on another visit!

We were walking the pod trying to pick what we wanted when the nice dude working there offered us a sample-sold! The lamb gyro was delish, the meat was really good and the wrap itself was a really thin tortilla like one. Really tasty! Would definitely come back again!

5 stars, what more do I say. Get the loaded fries and make sure to tip Ibraham! Times are tough, but keep the local food scene alive. Food is great, servings are large, host is friendly above and beyond. Whether you’re walking, biking, driving, or unicycling; a local or a traveler; make sure to stop by and grab a bite from a locally owned and operated eatery. Skip the corporate-run fast food, eat at Kafka!

Really good chicken gyro. The size was huge though. Gets really hard to eat the way it's made - basically like a big open taco. Fries tasted great too - with that simple homemade taste. This is inside The Cart Blocks square. There's some shared covered seating in the square. And ample street parking in the 1-2 blocks surrounding it.

This was my first time in Portland and I had heard about the phenomenal food truck culture in the city. This one was my absolute favorite of them all!
Kafta house is a “Mom & Pop” owned food truck offering middle eastern/Mediterranean cuisine. The owners are very warm people and treat their customers like family who have come over for dinner.
I had the lamb gyros with fries. The lamb meat was perfectly cooked and seasoned tastefully, as were the fries. I’ve eaten many gyros in my life, but have to say this one was my favorite.
The cardamom chai was the perfect ending to a great meal. Thank you to the owners for the most memorable dining experience during my stay in Portland! I wish this food truck existed in the city where I live. I will stop by again if I come back to Portland.

And i could have ordered a second falafel gyro immediately! Or at least order a side of fresh falafel balls and pop them like popcorn shrimp!
